I am quite a late-comer to the world of Equine Dentistry and have spent most of my working life focused around administration. Owning a horse had always been a hobby for me and I'd never considered that he might inspire my career.
I did a fair bit of travelling a few years ago and one experience I had was working as a groom for the Sydney Mounted Police. I realised then, how nice it was to work with horses every day. I enjoyed the physical challenge and being responsible for their happiness and comfort.
I came home and worked on the farm but eventually ended up back in an office. I had a faint idea that I wanted to be an Equine Dental Technician but had found it extremely difficult to get any advice or information about how to go about it. There didn't seem to be any formal training in this country and the British Association of EDT's put me off with talk of huge initial outlays and very low returns. They even told me that my car wasn't big enough to carry all the tools I would be needing!!
I telephoned and emailed all of my local tooth raspers and asked for work experience or advice but they were all very busy and far too busy to take on apprentices. I eventually managed to get some work experience and I realised that I had finally found the job for me!!
In 2006, I took the bull by the horns and decided that I wanted to go for it. I managed to secure a place at the American School of Equine Dentistry in West Virginia and away I went. The school is owned and run by a vet who personally teaches every class. It was an intensive course and divided equally between theory and practical.
I haven't looked back since!
I really enjoy my work and keep my main objective uppermost whilst working and that is to improve the welfare of the horse.
